The ‘Marine-Space Technology Family Festival’ is the nation’s first hands-on education program specialized in new marine industries, developed in collaboration with Busan Technopark and Dongascience to promote marine science culture.

As the convergence of advanced technologies such as big data and space technology with the marine sector accelerates, the event was organized as part of the city’s ‘Busan New Marine Industry Future Convergence Talent Education Operation Plan’ to meet the growing demand for education on new marine science and technology.

From September 24 to 30, the city recruited participants online and selected 15 family teams (about 50 people) with elementary school children. During the recruitment process, 77 teams (about 260 people) applied, recording a high competition rate of 5 to 1 and drawing great interest from citizens.

On the day of the event, the 15 participating family teams enjoyed a variety of programs, including: ▲theoretical lectures on new marine industries ▲a tour and quiz at the exhibition hall for BusanSat, a microsatellite for collecting marine data ▲an augmented reality (AR) cube experience in marine science ▲and building autonomous ships.

A parent identified as Mr. A (Suyeong-gu, Busan), who participated in the program, said, “The field of new marine industries was unfamiliar to me, but experiencing hands-on content with my child provided a great opportunity to learn about the future industries of Busan as a marine city.”

Another parent, Mr. B (Nam-gu, Busan), commented, “I learned for the first time that Busan has developed its own satellite, and there were many interesting programs tailored to children’s perspectives.” He expressed satisfaction and hoped that related programs would be further expanded.

Shim Seongtae, Director of the Marine, Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau of the city, said, “Thanks to the high interest from citizens in this event, it became an opportunity to widely promote the future industries of ‘Marine Capital Busan.’ We will continue to contribute to nurturing future talent and spreading culture in the marine science and technology sector by linking the nation’s first new marine industry education content with outstanding local education and exhibition facilities such as the National Busan Science Museum.”
