Controversy Over Election Campaign Greetings with Officials During Visit to Gyeongsan City Hall
Violation of Prohibition on Door-to-Door Visits Under Public Official Election Act
Up to 3 Years Imprisonment or 6 Million Won Fine
On the 4th, the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office indicted Jo Ji-yeon, a member of the People Power Party (Gyeongbuk Gyeongsan City), without detention on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act. Jo is accused of conducting door-to-door visits during the official campaign period for the 22nd National Assembly election.
In April, Jo reportedly visited Gyeongsan City Hall and other locations three times together with a Gyeongsan city council member, greeting public officials. Such actions constitute door-to-door campaign activities prohibited under the Public Official Election Act.
When Jo appeared before the prosecution on the 6th of last month, she did not provide any specific response to media questions regarding the charges. According to the Public Official Election Act, violating the prohibition on door-to-door campaign activities can result in imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to 6 million won.
This case once again highlights the issue of illegal election campaigning in the political sphere.
