Six Recipients Selected for the 66th Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Cultural Awards

Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) held the selection committee meeting for the recipients of the ‘66th Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Cultural Award’ on the 2nd, and finalized and announced six winners across six categories for the development of Gangwon culture.

From July 8 to August 30, over a period of about 50 days, candidates were solicited, resulting in 21 nominees across six categories. After a fair evaluation process involving a first round of category-specific judging and a second round of overall judging by the appointed selection committee, one winner was chosen from each of the six categories, totaling six recipients.


Now in its 66th year, the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Cultural Award, which began in 1959, is the highest honor boasting tradition and prestige in the cultural and artistic fields of Gangwon Province, with a total of 314 recipients to date.


Jung Gwang-yeol, Deputy Governor of Gangwon Province for Economic Affairs, stated, “By awarding the long-standing Gangwon Province Cultural Award, we honor the cultural and artistic figures in Gangwon who have worked hard for the promotion of local culture, and we plan to actively support our Gangwon artists to boost their pride and strengthen their capabilities.”


The award ceremony is scheduled to be held at Hoban Square in Chuncheon City Hall on October 19 during the commemorative event of the ‘2024 Gangwon Artists Hanmadang’.


The awardees are as follows.


△ Performing Arts category: Namgung Jin (44, Chuncheon, Lighting Designer)

△ Visual Arts category: Hong Seok-chang (83, Yeongwol, Painter)

△ Traditional Arts category: Kim Geum-su (64, Taebaek, Sorikkun [traditional Korean singer])

△ Literature category: Hong Jeong-sik (82, Donghae, Writer)

△ Sports category: Park Seung-yong (65, Yanggu, CEO of the nonprofit organization Beautiful Companion)

△ Local Culture Research category: Lee Dong-jin (65, Wonju, Planning and Operations Team Leader at Wonju Eol Education Center)
