On the 2nd, President Yoon Suk-yeol exercised his veto power on three bills, known as the 'Kim Geon-hee Special Prosecutor Act,' the 'Chae Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor Act,' and the 'Local Currency Act.' This marks the 22nd to 24th veto since his inauguration.
The Presidential Office announced through a spokesperson that President Yoon approved the request for reconsideration regarding the "Act on the Appointment of a Special Prosecutor for the Investigation of Obstruction and Concealment of the Death of a Marine in the Line of Duty," the "Act on the Appointment of a Special Prosecutor for the Investigation of Stock Price Manipulation Involving Kim Geon-hee, Spouse of President Yoon Suk-yeol," and the "Partial Amendment to the Act on the Promotion of Local Love Gift Certificates."
These bills were passed by the National Assembly plenary session on the 19th of last month, led by the opposition parties including the Democratic Party, and were sent to the government. Subsequently, on the 30th of last month, the government submitted the request for reconsideration of these bills at the Cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, where it was approved.
With President Yoon exercising his veto on this day, the three bills will be sent back to the National Assembly. The Democratic Party is expected to hold a plenary session on the 4th to re-vote on the bills. For the bills to be re-enacted, a majority of the total members must be present, and at least two-thirds of the members present must vote in favor.
Currently, the People Power Party holds 108 seats, so if eight or more members defect, the bills will pass. On this day, President Yoon is expected to invite party floor leader Choo Kyung-ho and other floor leaders, standing committee chairs, and committee secretaries from the party to Yongsan for a dinner to strengthen unity.
