Yumiyoung Samsung Electronics Vice President "AI-Evolved Home Appliances, Now Life's Companion"

Newsroom Opinion Piece

Yoo Mi-young, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Digital Appliances (DA) Division, said on the 2nd, "Samsung home appliances are gradually expanding their role as companions in our daily lives through artificial intelligence (AI)." She explained that home appliances combined with AI and software technology are moving beyond simple tools to become partners in life.

In a contribution to the Samsung Electronics Newsroom on the same day, Vice President Yoo stated, "As AI technology is integrated into home appliances, it analyzes users' lifestyle patterns to provide optimal functions, greatly reducing the inconvenience of household chores." A representative example is Samsung Electronics' 'Bespoke AI Family Hub' refrigerator, which automatically recognizes ingredients through internal cameras to create a food list and notifies users of the expiration dates of stored items, significantly enhancing user convenience. The 'Bespoke AI Combo' offers AI-customized washing functions that automatically set the optimal washing course according to the characteristics of the laundry.

Samsung Electronics is strengthening the functions of AI home appliances through continuous software updates. Vice President Yoo said, "Through our regular software update service called 'Smart Forward,' we have implemented more than 50 core function updates on major home appliances this year." This adds new features to existing products, extending their lifespan and value. In fact, Samsung Electronics applied the 'Quick Share' feature of the 2024 model to Family Hub refrigerators released since 2017 via software updates, allowing users to easily view photos and videos from their smartphones on the refrigerator screen.

Another important pillar of home appliances combined with AI and software is security. Vice President Yoo emphasized, "The importance of security software in a connected product environment cannot be overstated," and explained that Samsung Electronics protects data safely even in connected environments between home appliances through its 'Knox Matrix' technology. This system protects user data by having interconnected home appliances check each other's security status.

Samsung Electronics is also actively working to improve accessibility using AI technology. Vice President Yoo explained, "'Voice ID,' first unveiled at the IFA 2024 exhibition in Germany last month, is a technology that distinguishes the voices of family members to analyze schedules, interests, health status, and provide customized functions." This feature offers more detailed personalized services by reflecting the user's lifestyle patterns.

Vice President Yoo described Samsung's AI home appliances as playing an integrated platform role that manages various devices in the home in connection with SmartThings. She said, "The screens equipped on Samsung AI home appliances are a combination of advanced hardware and software," and added, "Samsung AI technology is expected to evolve into a troubleshooter that predicts and diagnoses malfunctions of home appliances connected to SmartThings and guides users to solutions via smartphones."

In conclusion, Vice President Yoo said, "At the Samsung Developer Conference 2024 (SDC24) to be held on the 3rd in San Jose, USA, you will be able to glimpse the future lifestyle led by Samsung’s devices combined with advanced software and this convergence."
