From the 11th to the 13th at 5 PM, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts
Held since 2004... This year's theme is Beopgochangsin
Crown Haitai Confectionery announced on the 2nd that it will hold the ‘19th Changsinje (創新祭)’ every day at 5 p.m. from the 11th to the 13th at the Seoul Sejong Center for the Performing Arts Grand Theater.
Started in 2004 with the theme of Beopgo Changsin (法古創新·creating newness based on the old), Changsinje is the largest traditional Korean music performance hosted by a private company, now in its 19th year. Top masters and talented musicians from Han-eum, along with Crown Haitai Confectionery executives and employees, will participate extensively in the performance.
This performance begins with the Baekje-era song 'Jeongeupsa' from a thousand years ago and unfolds as a large-scale show where ‘Sujecheon (壽齊天)’, which developed into the highest form of royal court music, is reinterpreted with a modern sensibility. Following the performances over the past two years that showcased the roots and evolution of Sujecheon, this year presents a new future that develops based on tradition. The original form of Sujecheon is reborn as a modern Sujecheon by integrating various traditional music genres.
With the lyrics lost and passed down as an instrumental piece, Sujecheon will be performed with the lyrics of Jeongeupsa as the song’s words, and the beauty of Sujecheon, praised as a heavenly sound, will be expressed through Jongmyo Jerye Ilmu, Cheoyongmu, as well as modern dance. Additionally, a large-scale traditional Korean music ensemble composed of string, wind, and percussion instruments, similar to a Western orchestra, will perform Sujecheon as a four-part traditional Korean orchestral piece. Then, the instrumental-only Sujecheon will be newly revived with Gu-eum (口音·lip song), and the piece will be completed with a Sijo Jeongga (classical Korean poetry song) exchange between male and female vocalists using Jeongeupsa lyrics, along with a choir of 120 Crown Haitai executives and employees.
In particular, Crown Haitai employees participating in the Jongmyo Jerye Ilmu and Sujecheon choir performances will showcase the skills they have honed over a long period in the company’s traditional music club on the large Changsinje stage. This represents a deeper level of artistic support, where they enjoy traditional music themselves and convey its beauty to the audience.
Meanwhile, for the first time in Changsinje performances, Han-eum talented musicians will also take the stage. On the 13th at 1 p.m., the ‘Yeongjae Han-eumhoe’ performance will be held on the same stage. It will feature not only the talented musicians’ Sujecheon performance but also a gathering of music, song, and dance (악가무, Ak-Ga-Mu). It is expected to be a stage where future masters who will inherit and develop the original form of traditional music can be seen.
Yoon Young-dal, Chairman of Crown Haitai Confectionery, said, “This performance was prepared to preserve the original form of Sujecheon while enjoying it more beautifully and splendidly and to pass it on progressively to future generations,” adding, “I hope more people will enjoy the beauty of Sujecheon, the greatest cultural heritage of Korean traditional music.”
