Top Prize for "Yeoji"
The team of students Park Junhee, Lee Sanguk, and Lee Haereum, third-year students from the Department of Architecture at Tongmyong University, recently received the prestigious Grand Prize at the 2024 Gyeongsangbuk-do Architecture Culture Festival Student Competition.
This student team selected the Seobon-ri Complex Cultural Park in Yecheon-eup, Yecheon-gun as their site, and under the title "Yeoji," proposed transforming the park, which had been used as a cemetery and farmland, into a surplus space within the city. They suggested turning it into a memorial park, a disaster prevention park, and a community space that citizens can use in their daily lives.
The Gyeongsangbuk-do Architecture Culture Festival, which began in 2009, was held from September 26 to 29.
The theme of this year's student competition was "Meeting of Tradition and Future (Local & Global)," aiming to concretize the expression of local and global themes through the presentation of complementary keywords such as region and world, tradition and future, memory and leap, and to seek new directions in architecture.
This nationwide competition awarded a total of 50 prizes: 1 Grand Prize, 2 Excellence Awards, 6 Merit Awards (3 Junior/3 Senior), 27 Special Awards, and 14 Honorable Mentions. The Tongmyong University student team entered in the Junior division but achieved the Grand Prize, surpassing both Junior and Senior divisions.
The students said, "Participating in this competition gave us an opportunity to learn more about Yecheon-gun, Gyeongbuk. We are truly delighted to receive the Grand Prize. We want to use this experience as a stepping stone to work even harder in our studies and become excellent architects in the future."
The Department of Architecture at Tongmyong University, based on its unique educational system, including regular joint classes with European architecture universities and Korea's only BIM-specialized linked major, has recorded the highest number of awards in major domestic and international student competitions and produces graduates with the highest competitiveness in the field of architectural design.
Students from the Department of Architecture at Dongmyung University are celebrating their winning of the Grand Prize at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Architecture Culture Festival Student Competition Exhibition.
