Pohang City Hosts International Exchange in Exosome Field... Leading Global Advanced Bio Industry

2024 Pohang Global Exosome Forum Held, Experts from Five Countries Participate

Innovative Drug Delivery System, Exosome Field Emerges as Next-Generation Advanced Bio Hub

Pohang City held the '2024 Pohang Global Exosome Forum' at the Pohang University of Science and Technology Biotechnology Research Center (PBC) from September 30 to October 1, focusing on the development of exosome-based therapeutics and diagnostic technologies.

Pohang City Hosts International Exchange in Exosome Field... Leading Global Advanced Bio Industry From September 30 to October 1, Pohang City hosted the "2024 Pohang Global Exosome Forum" at the Pohang Biotechnology Center (PBC) of Pohang University of Science and Technology.

Attended by over 100 experts in the exosome field from Korea and abroad, as well as industry-academia-research representatives, the forum was organized to discuss strategies for establishing a global industrial foundation for exosomes, a promising advanced biotechnology, and for integrating exosome-based therapies with healthcare.

Exosomes, which serve as next-generation drug delivery vehicles and messengers for intercellular communication, are considered a highly promising technology in advanced biotechnology. The industrial competitiveness and related technologies utilizing exosomes are attracting significant attention.

During the forum, eight experts from academia, industry, and research institutes across five countries, including the United States and Sweden, participated to present and discuss recent technological trends and research achievements under three main topics: ▲Basic research and clinical application of exosomes ▲Development of exosome-based therapeutics ▲Future prospects of exosomes.

Notably, Sai Kiang Lim, a founding member of the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles and a leading authority on stem cell-derived exosome therapeutics, who serves as Director at Paracrine Therapeutics in Singapore, introduced the development of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosome-based therapies and emphasized the importance of exosome research.

In addition, prominent figures such as Andrew F. Hill, former president of the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles and professor at Victoria University, and Luke P. Lee, professor at Harvard Medical School, delivered lectures, receiving enthusiastic responses from the audience.

The forum also served as a global networking and collaboration platform for academia, industry, and research, exploring not only basic research and new therapeutic approaches in the exosome field but also future development strategies for various applications such as precision medicine.

Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "We will take the lead in embracing new challenges to secure advanced bio source technologies that will drive the nation's future development through global networks and international cooperation in the rapidly emerging exosome field as an innovative drug delivery system," adding, "We will do our best to help Pohang become a global hub for next-generation advanced bio research."

Pohang City was designated as a national advanced strategic industry bio-specialized complex in June, securing a new growth engine. The city is leading the establishment of a proactive bio-health industry cluster based on its world-class large-scale equipment such as the synchrotron radiation accelerator and cryo-electron microscope, as well as top-tier bio infrastructure including the 'Membrane Protein Research Institute,' a global new drug development research institute, and the 'Bio Future Technology Innovation Research Center,' a leader in global gene and cell therapy research.
