Diverse Programs to Enhance Professionalism and Competence as Taekwondo Referees
Jung Hyondo, an alumnus of the Department of Physical Education at Kyungnam University (Taekwondo master, 9th Dan), who has served as a Taekwondo referee at various international and domestic competitions for the past 30 years, recently published "Taekwondo Refereeing," a book that comprehensively covers his personal experiences, expertise, and referee-related research papers.
This book is structured to help cultivate the professionalism and competence required of a Taekwondo referee. It covers a wide range of topics, including the authority and functions of referees, the principles that Taekwondo referees must adhere to, types of misjudgments in matches, factors influencing referee decisions, the ideal positioning of the main referee, handling blind spots during matches, and the postures of main and assistant referees.
Additionally, the book includes seven referee-related research papers that Jung completed while attending the "Paralympic Sports Referee Academy Education" offered by the Korea Paralympic Committee.
Jung stated, "I've always thought that it becomes harder to be a referee as you gain more experience and time passes. While serving as a referee at international competitions, competitions for both people with and without disabilities, amateur sports events, the World Hanmadang, and Poomsae competitions, I often found it confusing because each federation and association has different rules, signals, and standards of application. However, I have always strived to make fair judgments with honor and pride as a referee. I am very pleased to have published this refereeing book without any major setbacks in my career, and I hope this book becomes a must-read that is beneficial and loved by coaches, athletes, and Taekwondo majors."
Meanwhile, Jung Hyondo has served as an executive referee for the Chungnam Taekwondo Association, the Korea Taekwondo Association, the Korea Para Taekwondo Association, and the Korea Sports for All Taekwondo Association, as well as the first executive referee and vice chairman of the Korea Secondary School Taekwondo Federation and the Korea University Taekwondo Federation, and as a referee and vice chairman of the World Taekwondo Hanmadang.
