Collaboration with Busan Foreign Workers Support Center
Safety and Health Education for Foreign Workers
The Busan Employment and Labor Office (Director Kim Junhui) and the Busan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (Director Gong Heungdu) held a safety and health education session for foreign workers at the Busan Workers’ Health Center located in Sasang-gu on the 29th, aiming to prevent industrial accidents and raise safety awareness among foreign workers in the Busan area.
This training targeted 45 foreign workers from three countries (Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia), who make up a significant portion of the workforce in small and medium-sized manufacturing businesses in Busan. The session was conducted for a total of 4 hours and 30 minutes, with 1 hour and 30 minutes allocated per nationality.
Prior to the training, the agency directly visited 134 workplaces in Busan that employ foreign workers to provide on-site guidance and registration for the session. In addition, they produced and distributed a “Safety and Health Content Kit” that compiles country-specific materials necessary for in-house safety and health training at each workplace, and provided direct instructions on how to use these resources, actively promoting the program and supporting the field.
Furthermore, in collaboration with the Busan Foreign Workers Support Center, interpreters for each country were assigned, and both pre-translation of the materials and simultaneous interpretation were provided, making it easier for participating foreign workers to understand complex industrial safety concepts.
In particular, moving away from the conventional presentation-based and monotonous training methods, the session utilized VR devices for multi-simultaneous experiential learning, allowing trainees to feel as if they were in accident scenarios. This enabled foreign workers to experience the dangers of safety accidents in a more immersive way and to easily understand proper work procedures, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of the training.
Director Gong Heungdu stated, “Recently, as Korea transitions into a multicultural society, systematically managing the safety and health of foreign workers has become an even more important task. In this context, we have implemented customized training to ensure the safety of foreign workers and prevent industrial accidents. We will continue to provide various forms of support so that foreign workers can work more safely at industrial sites in the future.”
