Starting next year, May 15 will be designated as 'Sejong the Great's Birthday,' and May 27 will be recognized as 'Aerospace Day,' establishing new national commemorative days.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 29th that it will publicly notify the draft amendment to the 'Regulations on Various Commemorative Days' until November 4. Accordingly, May 15 and May 27 will be designated as national commemorative days starting next year. Since national commemorative days are meant to reflect on the significance of the dates, they are not public holidays. The 'Sejong the Great's Birthday' will be overseen by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Cultural Heritage Administration, while 'Aerospace Day' will be managed by the Aerospace Administration.

Until now, the government, local governments, and civic groups have independently held various events such as exhibitions and performances related to Sejong the Great and Hangeul on May 15, his birthday. Therefore, there have been calls to establish this day as a national commemorative day to hold events at the national level.

An official from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety explained, "May 15 is designated as 'Sejong the Great's Birthday' every year to honor Sejong the Great's remarkable achievements and to inherit and develop his creative spirit and benevolent philosophy, thereby enhancing pride as a cultural nation." The official added, "Meaningful events will be expanded beyond the current level, and the public will be able to reflect on the importance of Hangeul." Furthermore, the official stated, "With the launch of the Aerospace Administration, we aim to raise public interest in the space economy and promote technological development and industrial advancement in the aerospace sector by designating May 27 as 'Aerospace Day.' Although the exact enforcement date of the amendment is undecided, it is expected to be finalized through a Cabinet meeting within this year and included as a national commemorative day starting next year."

Meanwhile, institutions or organizations with opinions during the public notification period can submit their feedback via the National Participation Legislation Center website, mail, or fax.
