Seoul City to Increase Supply of 'Hero Youth Housing' for Disabled Veterans

10 Additional Households... Around 40-50% of Nearby Market Prices
Strengthened Legal Support for National Merit Registration Starting This Year

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is increasing the supply of 'Hero Youth Housing,' allowing young wounded veterans to live for 10 years at prices lower than the market rate. In particular, customized legal support necessary for application, selection, and grade determination for veterans such as national merit recipients will also be strengthened.

On the 30th, Seoul announced that following the supply of 7 units of 'Hero Youth Housing' last year in cooperation with LH (Korea Land and Housing Corporation), an additional 10 units will be supplied this year.

Seoul City to Increase Supply of 'Hero Youth Housing' for Disabled Veterans Last June, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon watched the play "Yeonpyeong," which dealt with the Yeonpyeong Island shelling. At the event were National Assembly member Bae Jun-young (from the left in the photo), retired Sergeant Ha Jae-heon, the "Mokham Landmine Hero," Chae Il, Director of the Defense Media Agency, and Lee Joo-eun, Director of the Seoul Youth Veterans Counseling Center.

'Hero Youth Housing' is the nation’s first specialized housing for wounded veterans, located in prime transit areas within Seoul. Residents can live in newly built housing at 40-50% of the market price for a period ranging from 2 years up to a maximum of 10 years. The units supplied this time are newly built homes located in Imun-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, within 300 meters of Hoegi Station, a prime transit area, with a deposit of 2 million KRW and monthly rent of approximately 280,000 to 290,000 KRW.

Applications are open until the 9th of next month via the Seoul Welfare Foundation website. Final candidates will be selected through a total of three rounds of screening.

A 'Hero Shelter' will also be established where young wounded veterans can communicate information among themselves, receive emotional support, and participate in various programs necessary for returning to daily life. The 'Hero Shelter' is scheduled to be set up in November in an idle space owned by LH located in Jongno-gu, which is convenient for transportation and easily accessible.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will also strengthen the functions of the 'Seoul Youth Wounded Veterans Counseling Center,' the first of its kind nationwide. Opened in March 2022 after Mayor Oh Se-hoon personally met with young merit recipients to listen to their difficulties, the center is a dedicated facility supporting young soldiers wounded during military service in their return to daily life and social advancement. Starting this year, in cooperation with the Korea Bar Association Legal Aid Foundation, the center is providing customized legal support covering eligibility screening, medical consultation, administrative appeals, and administrative litigation from application to selection and grade determination for merit recipients. For youth who are basic livelihood security recipients or belong to the lower-income bracket, the city will also cover litigation costs in case of loss.

Jung Sang-hoon, Director of Welfare at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, "Although those who have faithfully fulfilled their military duties and were wounded are called young heroes, they face difficulties handling the complex procedures from applying for benefits to receiving them alone. We will help young heroes live healthily in society by alleviating housing concerns and systematically supporting their return to daily life and social advancement through the Youth Wounded Veterans Counseling Center."
