Plan to Expand to 20 Temporary Mobile Worker Rest Areas by 2026
The third mobile worker rest area for mobile workers will open on the 30th in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province.
Mobile workers are those who work for platforms such as delivery drivers, substitute drivers, courier workers, and private tutors. Due to the nature of their work involving frequent movement, their rest times are irregular and there are no designated rest areas, making the establishment of rest areas necessary.
Gyeonggi Province currently operates a total of 21 mobile worker rest areas nationwide (10 main centers and 11 simple centers). The installation of simple rest areas began in 2023, with a goal to establish a total of 20 by 2026.
Mobile worker rest areas are divided into ‘main centers’ and ‘simple centers.’ Main centers operate as office-type spaces providing rest areas and counseling/support programs, while simple centers are container-type facilities that are relatively inexpensive to install and operate and have good accessibility. Simple centers offer shorter rest periods than main centers and operate 24 hours on weekends and holidays when delivery and substitute driving workloads increase, resulting in high satisfaction among mobile workers.
The rest area being installed this time is a simple center located in Seongpo-dong, Sangnok-gu, consisting of a container booth approximately 8 pyeong (27㎡) in size. Ansan City previously established a main center on December 27, 2022, and a simple center on December 27, 2023, making this the third mobile worker rest area (Wheeling Branch 3).
Gyeonggi Province plans to install a total of four simple rest areas this year in Namyangju, Ansan, Paju, and Hwaseong. Following Namyangju in July, this is the second installation this year. Installations in Paju and Hwaseong are scheduled for October.
Wheeling Branch 3 is equipped with various convenience facilities. It includes an electric two-wheeler battery exchange station, heating and cooling systems, wireless internet, hot and cold water dispensers, a TV, sofas, and operates year-round with a 24-hour unmanned security system.
Jo Sang-gi, Director of Labor Rights and Interests at Gyeonggi Province, said, "Through this simple mobile worker rest area in Ansan, we will create an environment where mobile workers can work more safely and healthily," adding, "We will continue to strive to improve the rights and welfare of mobile workers."
