Changwon Special City, Horizontal Placement of Contemporary Sculptures Throughout the City
The 2024 7th Changwon Sculpture Biennale, hosted by Changwon Special City and organized by the Changwon Cultural Foundation, has opened under the theme "The Big Apple in Silence."
Starting with its opening on the 27th, the event will run for 45 days until November 10, showcasing 177 works and programs by 63 teams from 16 countries at Seongsan Art Hall, Seongsan Shell Mound, Dongnam Stadium, and Changwon Municipal Masan Moonshin Art Museum.
Changwon Special City Mayor Hong Nampyo is delivering a welcome speech at the opening ceremony of the Changwon Sculpture Biennale.
The opening ceremony was attended by over 300 people, including participating artists from overseas and key figures from the art community. It began with an opening declaration by Cho Youngpa, CEO of the Changwon Cultural Foundation, and a welcoming speech by Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City. Artistic Director Hyun Siwon then introduced the participating artists and works of the biennale and, together with the attendees, toured the exhibition at Seongsan Art Hall.
The direction of the exhibition spaces and programs for this biennale is structured around four main themes.
At Seongsan Art Hall, the exhibition flow is designed to intersect the horizontality of sculpture addressed by the biennale, changes in industry, women and labor, and movements of the community. ▲Seongsan Shell Mound is a site discovered in 1973 when a mountain was cut down to build factories for the Changwon National Industrial Complex, suggesting a dual timeline of production and excavation.
Dongnam Stadium, located within the Changwon National Industrial Complex, is a space imbued with the time of workers, where works that observe the movement of sculpture and the community are exhibited. ▲Changwon Municipal Masan Moonshin Art Museum, established over 14 years by sculptor Moonshin himself, reflects the perspective of a space where individual ideals and public values, sculpture and the city, are interconnected. Visitors will become a key part of this biennale as they move through and view the works from various perspectives.
During the event, symposia and various audience participation workshops will be held, providing a platform for local and sculptural discourse in Changwon. Applications for participation can be made through the official Changwon Sculpture Biennale website.
Mayor Hong stated, "This biennale offers more opportunities for audience participation than ever before, with a wide range of exhibits and programs prepared. The accumulation of time spent experiencing and sharing on-site will help our biennale grow into a world-class sculpture festival."
