According to AFP and others, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated in a press release that day, "We are attacking targets belonging to the Hezbollah terrorist organization in the Bekaa Valley region of eastern Lebanon." They added, "Air raid sirens sounded as Hezbollah attacked northern Israel."

Major foreign media reported that the Israeli military carried out airstrikes in mountainous areas, including the southern suburbs of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, and the village of Bamdoun southeast of Beirut, in the early morning hours.

Hezbollah also issued a statement around the same time claiming to have attacked Israel. Hezbollah said, "In response to Israel's attack, we launched Fadi-1 rockets at the Kabri kibbutz (collective farm) in northern Israel." Hezbollah claimed this attack was "to protect Lebanon and its people and to respond to Israel's barbaric attacks targeting civilians."

The previous day, the Israeli military conducted a large-scale airstrike targeting Hezbollah's headquarters located in the Dahieh area in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Following this attack, foreign media reported that the fate of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah became unclear, and communication with senior leadership was cut off.
