The camera has 2 hours of recorded video footage.
Someone installed a small camera in the hallway of an apartment in Daejeon, prompting a police investigation.
According to Yonhap News on the 27th, on the 24th at around 7:40 p.m., resident A discovered a black small camera pointed toward the hallway in a corridor-style apartment in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon. After confirming with the security office that the camera was not installed for security purposes, A immediately reported it to the police.
The camera collected by the police contained two hours of recorded footage. Although the image quality was not very good, the gender and actions of the person recorded in the video were identifiable. A, who first discovered the camera, speculated, "It seems to be the act of an outsider." A said, "At first, I thought it was just a surveillance camera, but after searching online, I found out it was a product often used as a hidden camera, which gave me chills and made me feel uneasy. Since the apartment was built in the 1990s and can be entered without a password, I suspect an outsider installed it with some malicious intent."
The discovered camera is actually a product that can be easily purchased online for 20,000 to 40,000 KRW. The police are analyzing elevator CCTV footage and other sources to find the person who installed the camera in the apartment hallway. A police official said, "We are investigating who installed it and for what purpose. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, if an outsider installed it without legitimate reason, charges such as trespassing could be applied." Under current law, trespassing on a building is punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 5 million KRW.
Meanwhile, the camera found in the apartment hallway was identified as the same product as the hidden camera discovered in a home bathroom toilet that sparked controversy online in July.
At that time, netizen B went home earlier than usual and found a camera pointing at the bathroom from the toilet, reporting it to the police, but the culprit was never caught. B said, "A guest came over and was checking if the toilet was clean when they noticed a flickering light from the camera, which startled them. My husband checks and cleans the bathroom every morning, so it definitely wasn’t there before I left, meaning someone must have entered while I was out."
B added, "The installed hidden camera was a short recording Chinese-made product, made of material that does not retain fingerprints well, and even the camera’s memory chip was damaged, so recovery was impossible. I took the risk to report this because I hope such incidents never happen again." B advised, "Before pressing a touch-type door lock, check the surroundings carefully, and after pressing, be sure to wipe off your fingerprints. Installing a camera at the entrance is also a good method."
