Exploring Measures to Revitalize Local Businesses and Economy in Goyang City
The Goyang Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Chairman Lee Sang-heon) and the Goyang Research Institute (Director Kim Hyun-ho) announced on the 27th that they held the "2nd Goyang Innovation Strategy Seminar" on the 25th at the Sono Calm Goyang Diamond Hall under the theme "Current Status and Future Vision of Goyang Special City’s Commercial District Economy."
The Goyang Innovation Strategy Seminar is a regular breakfast seminar jointly promoted by the Goyang Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Goyang Research Institute. It is meaningful in that it conducts policy research based on the voices from the business field and seeks innovative measures for the local economy of Goyang City. The seminar was initiated to prepare ways to coexist with local businesses amid the recent deterioration of Goyang City’s commercial district economy.
Lee Dong-hwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, said, “This is an important time when a great transformation of Goyang Special City is beginning and we are one step closer to becoming a self-sufficient city. I am sincerely pleased that the 2nd Goyang Innovation Strategy Seminar was held for the development of Goyang City.”
He added, “Goyang City has all the conditions to succeed as an economic free zone in every aspect, including geographical and residential conditions. Using these favorable conditions as a stepping stone, we are actively working on increasing the chances of success. I hope that the partnership between Goyang City and the Goyang Chamber of Commerce and Industry will become even stronger through the upcoming Goyang Innovation Strategy Seminars.”
At the seminar, Kim Yong-deok, Head of the Self-Sufficient Economy Research Office and Director of the Future Strategy Data Center at the Goyang Research Institute, gave a presentation titled “Current Status and Key Issues of Goyang Special City’s Commercial District Economy.” He emphasized the need to diagnose problems by commercial district and devise revitalization plans amid the worsening commercial district economy in Goyang City. He particularly pointed out the importance of first identifying the commercial districts facing serious difficulties and preparing policies that small business owners and self-employed individuals can feel directly.
Jeong Eun-ae, Research Fellow at the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development, presented on “Measures to Revitalize the Local Commercial District Economy,” diagnosing the internal and external environments of local commercial districts and the reality of commercial districts in Korea, and suggesting ways to revitalize the local commercial district economy. She stressed the need to design policies that increase participation rates of various economic actors by understanding the relationship between small business owners and the local community.
Following this, a discussion was held with Jo Bong-hyun, Vice President of IBK Pension Insurance, as the moderator, where three panelists shared their opinions on the local commercial districts.
Kim Yong-rak, Chairman of the Goyang Small Business Association, said, “It is necessary to consider ways for various events and festivals held in Goyang City to translate into profits for small business owners and the self-employed.”
Next, Kim Young-soo, Senior Research Fellow at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade, stated, “An accurate diagnosis of the causes related to local commercial districts must precede, and policies related to local commercial districts should be implemented centered on local governments closely connected to the field.”
Shim Song-hak, Director of the Goyang Research Institute, emphasized, “For coexistence in Goyang City, regulation may be necessary rather than deregulation. The next five years are the golden time to revive Goyang City’s commercial district economy.”
The Goyang Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Goyang Research Institute plan to regularly hold the “Goyang Innovation Strategy Seminar” to revitalize the local commercial districts of Goyang City and operate it systematically and efficiently through the “Goyang Innovation Strategy Seminar Steering Committee.”
