Held for residents to improve correct awareness of 'disability' and 'human rights'
Expanded from 'Disability Human Rights Film Festival' to 'Geumcheon Independent Living Festa'
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that on the 26th at 6 PM, it held the 1st ‘Geumcheon Independent Living Festa’ in the Geumcheon-gu Office plaza together with the Geumcheon Disabled Independent Living Center.
The district has held an annual Disability Rights Film Festival since 2014 with the aim of improving residents’ correct awareness of disability and human rights. Films portraying the difficulties and discriminatory elements experienced by people with disabilities from a human rights perspective were screened.
Starting this year, to establish it as a local cultural event in Geumcheon-gu, the name was newly changed to ‘Geumcheon Independent Living Festa,’ and cultural events including the film festival were held.
Before the main event began, the film When the Buckwheat Flowers Bloom, which delivers sound information such as dialogue and music with audio description, was screened.
Afterwards, certificates of commendation were awarded to three residents who contributed to the advancement of disability human rights, followed by a cultural performance prepared by disabled artists and clubs within Geumcheon-gu.
From 7 PM, the films We Speak and People of Supported Housing, depicting the human rights and independence of people with disabilities and the lives of people with severe disabilities living in the community, were screened. About 120 residents, both with and without disabilities, attended and enjoyed the films.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “The Geumcheon Independent Living Festa is a meaningful event that can improve the human rights of people with disabilities through films that have continued for 11 years. Moving forward, I will work more actively on the ground to find and resolve welfare blind spots so that Geumcheon can be a place where everyone can share happiness together.”
The Geumcheon Disabled Independent Living Center prioritizes addressing the issue of rights violations solely due to having a disability as its top task and is promoting related projects.
It supports people with severe disabilities in the region to restore their human rights as citizens and to achieve social participation and an autonomous life.
