Pusan National University and POSTECH Sign MOU for Innovative Research at Global Leading Research Center

Cooperation for Advanced Bio Technology Development and Global Innovative Talent Cultivation

HIC-B-IRC, World-Class Research Capacity in Bio and Digital Olfaction

The Humanoid Olfactory Display Innovation Research Center (HIC) at Pusan National University, which is carrying out a Global Leading Research Center project supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Bio-Future Technology Innovation Research Center (B-IRC) at Pohang University of Science and Technology signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for mutual cooperation at the Pusan National University Samsung Industry-Academic Cooperation Hall on the afternoon of the 26th.

This MOU was promoted to strengthen research collaboration in advanced bio fields and olfactory digitalization technologies, and to enhance the global competitiveness of both universities. Both institutions expect this to foster creative talent and produce innovative research outcomes.

Pusan National University HIC (Director: Jinwoo Oh, Professor of Nano Energy Engineering) is an innovative research center that was finally selected for the 2024 Ministry of Science and ICT Global Leading Research Center (IRC) support project. It is currently establishing the world’s first olfactory standardization center with the goal of realizing the digitalization of olfaction.

HIC plans to lead the development of olfactory big data and related technologies that can be applied in various fields such as medical diagnostics and urban and industrial environment management, thereby contributing to securing Korea’s super-gap technological competitiveness.

POSTECH B-IRC (Director: Jooyeon Yoo, Professor of Life Sciences) is focusing not only on developing fundamental technologies for new concept cell and gene therapies based on biomembrane engineering, but also on commercialization research through collaboration among industry, academia, research institutes, and hospitals, as well as nurturing globally innovative talent with an enterprise-friendly mindset. The center aims to secure a super-gap in national future strategic industries and contribute to the welfare of all humanity.

With the signing of this MOU, the two universities plan to conduct joint research combining olfactory display technology with gene and cell therapy technologies. In particular, olfactory display technology is expected to enable early diagnosis of various diseases, and the combination of biotechnology with digitalized olfactory technology is projected to yield innovative research results.

Jinwoo Oh, Director of Pusan National University HIC, said, “This agreement will serve as an opportunity for Pusan National University and POSTECH to consolidate world-class research capabilities in the fields of bio and digital olfaction,” adding, “The cooperation between the two universities is expected to play an important role in advancing national strategic technologies.”

Jooyeon Yoo, Director of POSTECH B-IRC, stated, “I hope this MOU will serve as a great opportunity to form a close network among IRC participating institutions, and that current and future IRC centers will further develop into advanced R&D hubs for national strategic technologies.”

Based on this MOU, the two universities plan to continue efforts to expand their global research network and strengthen cooperation with various industrial sectors to achieve the advancement and self-reliance of national strategic technologies.
