Songhyeon-dong Site to Become a 'Cultural Park'... Simultaneous Development with 'Lee Geonhee Donation Hall'

Scheduled to Begin Construction by the End of Next Year... Target Completion in 2028

A 'garden-style park' is planned to be created around 2028 on the Songhyeon-dong site in Jongno-gu, Seoul, which has been developed as an open green space.

On the 27th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will begin full-scale work to create the park, starting with the design order for Songhyeon Cultural Park and parking lot within this month. The design will be completed by the end of next year, aiming for simultaneous groundbreaking with the 'Lee Kun-hee Donation Hall (tentative name),' which has been under a public contest led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism since July.

On the west side of the Songhyeon-dong site, an area of approximately 27,000㎡, Seoul City will create a cultural park and an underground parking lot with a capacity of 400 passenger cars and 50 buses. On the east side, 10,000㎡ will house the Lee Kun-hee Donation Hall.

The Songhyeon-dong site had been enclosed by high walls for the past 100 years, but since Seoul City temporarily opened it as the 'Open Songhyeon Green Plaza' in 2022, citizens have continuously visited. The city announced plans the same year to develop the park in connection with the Lee Kun-hee Donation Hall by preparing a basic plan. Seoul City and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism plan to start construction at the end of next year after completing the design of Songhyeon Park and the donation hall in the second half of next year.

Im Chang-su, Director of Future Space Planning at Seoul City, said, "Once Songhyeon Cultural Park and the Lee Kun-hee Donation Hall are established, the Songhyeon-dong site will emerge as a representative cultural tourism attraction of South Korea. We will steadily push forward the project to quickly provide an open garden where nature and culture harmonize and a cultural space loved by all Seoul citizens."
