Busan Urban Corporation Holds 'Smart BOOKmorning' Event on Urban Space Reorganization for Smart Mobility

Special Lecture by Professor Kim Seungnam of Chung-Ang University Department of Social Infrastructure Systems Engineering

Discussion Based on Imagination of Urban Structure Changes Due to Smart Mobility

Busan Metropolitan Corporation (BMC) held the learning group 'Smart BOOK Morning' for the development of a smart city and airport complex city on the 25th.

'Smart BOOK Morning' is a study club operated by BMC on the last Wednesday of every month to research the future of Busan, including smart cities and airport complex cities. It began in June 2022 with a lecture by President Kim Yonghak and has now reached its 24th session.

The event was attended by more than 40 executives and staff members, as well as external participants such as members of the Busan Metropolitan Council.

The event featured a special lecture by Professor Kim Seungnam of Chung-Ang University's Department of Social Infrastructure Systems Engineering, under the theme of 'Reorganization of Urban Space Considering Smart Mobility.'

Professor Kim Seungnam holds a bachelor's degree in urban planning and a master's and doctorate in urban engineering from Seoul National University. He has worked at the Korea Institute of Architectural Culture, Seoul National University Institute of Construction and Environmental Engineering, and the Walkable Environment Research Center. He is currently an associate professor in the Urban Systems Engineering major at Chung-Ang University's Department of Social Infrastructure Systems Engineering.

Professor Kim began his lecture by citing GM's Futurama, which was introduced at the 1939 New York World's Fair, stating, "It is important for urban planners to adapt cities to technological advancements, but it is also necessary to have the imagination to propose visions for future cities and to drive technological development accordingly."

He then introduced insights from McKinsey Global Institute's 'Smart Cities: Digital Solutions for a More Livable Future' and the National Association of City Transportation Officials' 'Blueprint for Autonomous Urbanism,' discussing implications for transportation and travel behavior in future cities and the impact on street design.

In particular, he argued that in response to the current street environment in Korea?characterized by narrow, dangerous back roads and increasing traffic congestion?it is necessary to create street environments, mobility, and public infrastructure that are inclusive of various users and modes of movement and transport, and that integrate smart technologies, considering the comprehensive increase in demand.

As an alternative, he proposed the 'Dynamic Street,' which allows for flexible spatial changes depending on the time of day.

Members who participated in the event discussed smart technologies related to the Eco Delta City smart city national pilot project, as well as issues such as the cost-benefit implications of street changes due to smart mobility, problems related to applying these changes to old downtown areas, and citizen acceptance.

Professor Kim concluded the event by stating that, for Eco Delta City, a new concept of urban planning is needed rather than simply adding smart technologies to existing plans, and that future cities should be prepared through various pilot projects and data accumulation.

Kim Yonghak, President of Busan Metropolitan Corporation, said, "Since the city's transportation system and street environment require large-scale investment and must be operated for a long time once installed, in-depth consideration is needed at the design stage. We will shape the future of Busan through creative imagination, deep reflection, and continuous research on the city to enhance the quality of life for citizens and ensure Busan's sustainable development."
