Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Lee Pil-hyung Listens to Migrant Families' Difficulties Through Communication on Various Topics

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Ilpyeong Lee) announced on the 26th that it held a discussion meeting on the 25th at the Dongdaemun-gu Family Center to communicate with multicultural migrant families.

This migrant family discussion meeting was held for the third time following August 30 and September 11. A total of 67 migrant families residing in Dongdaemun-gu attended the meeting.


During the discussion, time was spent listening to the difficulties and inconveniences experienced by migrant families living in Korea.


The migrant families especially raised a series of requests including ▲long-term job introductions ▲budget support for self-help groups ▲performance opportunities for Happy Echo (multicultural women's choir) ▲improving accessibility to the Family Center through bus route readjustments and crosswalk maintenance ▲legal counseling support for naturalization and resolving conflicts with spouses ▲support for single-parent migrant family childcare ▲recommendations for popular restaurants in Dongdaemun-gu ▲and guidance on support projects for foreigners new to Korea.

The Dongdaemun-gu Family Center introduced various adaptation programs to migrant families and exchanged opinions.


Currently, the Dongdaemun-gu Family Center is promoting various projects for migrant families, including ▲Korean language education ▲operation of self-help groups ▲interpretation and translation services ▲exchange and communication space programs ▲vocational training programs ▲and bilingual education support.


Migrant families who attended this discussion meeting shared their impressions, saying, “Through the Family Center programs, we have made many friends and greatly improved our Korean language skills,” and “Especially, the bilingual education and orchestra programs have been a great help for our children to adapt well to Korea.”


Mayor Ilpyeong Lee, who attended the discussion meeting, observed the multicultural family exchange and communication space program operated at the Family Center and encouraged the migrant families participating in the program.


The mayor said, “Through this discussion meeting, I was able to directly communicate with migrant families and deeply understand the difficulties they face in living in Korea,” adding, “Dongdaemun-gu will do its best to support migrant families and their children so that they can naturally settle as members of our society and live happy lives.”
