The high-performance consumer SSD product, ‘990 EVO Plus,’ enhances efficiency by incorporating 8th generation V-NAND and a 5nm controller. The sequential read and write speeds are up to 7,250MB (megabytes) per second and 6,300MB per second, respectively, representing up to a 50% improvement compared to its predecessor. Power efficiency has improved by more than 70%, meaning data can be transferred faster with the same power consumption.

The 990 EVO Plus is available in three capacities: 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB. Notably, the 4TB model’s random read and write speeds are 1,050K IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 1,400K IOPS, respectively. It is designed to transfer data quickly even without DRAM inside the product.

When installed on the motherboard of a laptop or PC, the product allows easy upgrades in both performance and capacity. It is expected to be useful for users working with high-performance devices such as gaming and creative workstations.

Through the ‘Samsung Magician 8.2’ software, scheduled for release on the 30th, additional product management features such as data migration, firmware updates, drive status monitoring, and data protection will be provided. Data migration refers to a feature supported by Magician that helps users easily copy existing disk data to the new SSD.

Samsung Electronics explained that with the recent increase in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) storage, the NAND and SSD markets are experiencing a favorable trend, leading to the launch of consumer SSDs following enterprise SSDs.

According to Omdia, the SSD market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of about 26% from 2023 to 2028. The market size is projected to reach approximately $55 billion (about 75 trillion KRW) by 2028, more than tripling compared to last year. According to market research firm Gartner, the consumer SSD market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of over 23% during the same period. The market size is also expected to grow about threefold, from $2.7 billion (about 3.6 trillion KRW) last year to $7.8 billion (about 10.4 trillion KRW) in 2028.

Samsung Electronics is the number one company in the consumer SSD market. According to market research firm Omdia, Samsung Electronics held a 35.1% market share in the consumer SSD market last year, ranking first.

Han-gu Son, Executive Director of the Brand Product Business Team at Samsung Electronics’ Memory Business Division, said, "Consumer demand for storage capable of storing large-capacity data is increasing to operate high-definition images and videos." He added, "'990 EVO Plus' is expected to satisfy a wide range of users, from general PC users to professionals, by providing fast data processing speeds and large storage capacity."
