Gnawing on Meat Bones and Sucking Bone Marrow
After a Quick Glance, Back to the Display Case
"How Can We Trust to Eat This?" Hygiene Concerns Spark Debate
A restaurant owner in China was caught trying to serve leftover food to customers, sparking controversy.
On the 20th (local time), Chinese local media Shengshibin released a video filmed by a customer dining at a restaurant in Inner Mongolia the previous day. In the video, a woman believed to be the restaurant owner is seen tearing meat placed in a glass display case with her hands and putting it into her mouth. She also chewed on the bones and even inserted a straw into the meat bones to suck out the marrow.
The problem arose from her actions afterward. After glancing around, she placed the meat and bones she had eaten on a plate and put it back into the display case. It appeared she was trying to sell the meat she had put her mouth on as if it were new food to customers. The restaurant has not yet issued an official statement regarding the controversy.
Netizens who saw the video reacted with comments such as, "Do they have no basic hygiene awareness?", "How can customers trust and eat at such a restaurant?", and "This behavior is incomprehensible unless they don’t want to run the business."
Meanwhile, hygiene controversies in Chinese restaurants are not new. In October 2022, at a restaurant located in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province in southern China, an employee cleaning the dining hall floor was seen gathering trash in one place and then dumping it into a basket containing tableware. Additionally, in December last year, a video circulated on social media showing several rats falling onto a customer's head and the table while dining at a hot pot specialty restaurant in Zhejiang Province in eastern China.
