19th Asia Construction Awards
Overseas Construction Association President Award Winner
Daewoo E&C, which received the Overseas Construction Association President's Award at this year's Asia Construction Awards, is securing sustainable growth momentum by pioneering overseas markets such as the Mumbai Sea Bridge in India despite uncertain external conditions.
The 'Mumbai Sea Bridge' in India, completed in January this year, is the longest sea bridge in India with a total length of 21.8 km. The Daewoo E&C consortium was responsible for the construction, design, procurement, and project management of the 7.8 km section of the six-lane sea bridge and one interchange. In particular, they handled the installation of a 180m steel bridge, the most challenging section of the entire bridge. Daewoo E&C set a record by completing the project without accidents in about 69 months.
Daewoo E&C applied the 'Precast Segment Method (PSM),' which has excellent carbon absorption capacity, at this site. This was to prevent damage to the mangrove forests, known as the lungs of the Earth, and to minimize marine pollution. The PSM method involves manufacturing bridge superstructure segments of a certain length in a factory, transporting them to the site, and then connecting them with cranes for construction.
During the construction period, conditions were challenging due to travel restrictions caused by COVID-19 and India's unique climatic phenomena. Despite difficulties in supplying imported steel plates due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Daewoo E&C overcame these by discovering various procurement routes and employing all possible methods. They also set up a vaccination center for employees and their families at the site, supporting vaccinations for about 3,000 people. Furthermore, they actively cooperated with local vaccination processes by partnering with a major regional hospital.
The peak construction months from June to September coincided with the monsoon season in India, characterized by strong winds and continuous heavy rain. Although work was practically impossible and there were concerns about delays, Daewoo E&C shortened transportation times through tidal level analysis and optimization of barge routes, completing the project in January this year.
With the opening of the Mumbai Sea Bridge, travel time between Mumbai and the new city Navi Mumbai has been significantly reduced from two hours to 30 minutes.
The bridge opening ceremony was attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, government officials, and key business figures. At the event, Prime Minister Modi expressed deep gratitude to Daewoo E&C and other contractors for adhering to safety standards and completing the sea bridge with the highest quality.
