Presentation of Hwarang Military Merit Medal to Families of 6.25 War Veterans

Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced on the 24th that it delivered the Hwarang Military Merit Medal and the medal certificate to the family of the late Corporal Kim Mal-dol, a Korean War veteran, at the district mayor's office.

The late Corporal Kim Mal-dol enlisted at the age of 18 as a member of the 6th Infantry Division and was killed in action at the age of 21 during the Battle of Geumhwa area in Gangwon Province in July 1953. At that time, the Geumhwa area was a region where fierce battles took place until just before the armistice agreement.

This awarding of the military merit medal was made possible through the Ministry of National Defense's "Korean War Military Merit Medal Recipient Search Project," which seeks to identify those who were decided to receive medals during the Korean War but did not receive them due to the chaos of war. The medal of the late Corporal Kim Mal-dol was received by his nephew, Kim Jeong-dae, 70 years after the award decision.

Mr. Kim Jeong-dae, who received the medal, said, "This medal carries the meaning of remembering all the warriors who participated in the Korean War," and expressed his gratitude, saying, "I deeply thank Dongdaemun-gu for preparing this meaningful occasion."

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, "Today's peace is possible thanks to the sacrifices of the warriors who fought in the Korean War," and added, "We will continue to honor the noble sacrifices of national veterans and will not neglect to pay proper respect to them."
