Seongdong-gu Installs Thermal Cameras in Public Parking Lots... Fire Prevention System Activated

Pilot installation at 4 locations including Kumho Elementary School, Seongsu 1-ga 1-dong, Seongsu 2-ga 1-dong, and Doseon-dong public parking lots to prevent electric vehicle fires... Additional multifunctional video surveillance devices installed to measure environmental data such as fine dust, temperature/humidity, harmful gases, and abnormal movements in real time for early accident response... Next year, thermal cameras will be installed on all rapid and slow chargers in public parking lots, and charging facilities will be relocated closer to entrances to enhance fire prevention efforts

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that it has begun establishing a full-scale fire prevention system by pilot installing thermal imaging cameras in public parking lots.

Amid growing concerns and anxiety over electric vehicles and charging facilities due to electric vehicle fires in apartment underground parking lots, the district installed thermal imaging cameras at four public parking lots: Kumho Elementary School, Seongsu 1-ga 1-dong, Seongsu 2-ga 1-dong, and Doseon-dong.

The newly installed thermal imaging cameras focus on monitoring electric vehicle charging facilities. When abnormal situations such as temperature rises are detected, an alarm is sent to the Seongdong-gu Urban Management Corporation parking control room, enabling early recognition of danger and prompt response.

The district plans to complete the establishment of a fire response system using thermal imaging cameras within this month and begin pilot operation from October. The fire occurrence stage manuals will also be subdivided to further strengthen response capabilities.

Next year, the district intends to install thermal imaging cameras on all rapid and slow chargers installed in 19 public parking lots in the area and fully operate the fire prevention system.

In particular, at the Kumho Elementary School public parking lot, which is adjacent to the elementary school and the Open Kumho Education and Culture Center and has a high flow of people, a multifunctional video surveillance device that measures environmental information data will be installed to enhance safety.

The multifunctional video surveillance device is a system that measures environmental information such as fine dust, temperature and humidity, harmful gases, and abnormal movements in real time through sensors. When the set threshold is exceeded, an alarm is sent to recognize emergency situations. The parking control room can check video information in real time, enabling early response to fires and other incidents and accidents.

Additionally, based on the results of a full survey of electric vehicle charging facilities in public parking lots conducted last July, the district plans to relocate charging facilities installed in underground floors closer to entrances to facilitate fire suppression. Chargers that have been installed for more than five years will also be replaced sequentially, continuing multifaceted efforts for fire prevention.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, "As residents' anxiety is increasing due to electric vehicle fires, we are making more thorough efforts to prevent electric vehicle fires in public parking lots," and added, "We will continue to prioritize residents' safety and create a safe city Seongdong free from fires and other disasters."
