Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is collaborating with former Apple Chief Design Officer (CDO) Jony Ive to develop a new artificial intelligence (AI) device. The industry is paying close attention to the partnership between Ive, who led Apple's heyday and ushered in the smartphone era, and Altman, who is leading the AI boom.
On the 23rd (local time), Ive, CEO of the startup 'LoveFrom,' revealed in an interview with The New York Times (NYT) that "I am working on an AI hardware project with Altman."
CEO Ive said, "I first met Altman while working with Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb." However, he did not provide specific details about the AI device under development.
The NYT reported that they had dinner together last year and exchanged views on how generative AI should be applied to new computing devices. They had several more dinners afterward, and LoveFrom decided to lead the design of the AI device.
It is reported that CEO Ive and CEO Altman are developing a device capable of running OpenAI's ChatGPT. The goal is to create a device that offers a "natural and intuitive user experience" for interacting with AI. The form factor or release schedule of the AI device has not been disclosed.
They plan to raise up to $1 billion (approximately 1.3355 trillion KRW) in investment by the end of the year to develop the AI device. Initially, it was reported that Masayoshi Son, chairman of Japan's SoftBank, would provide most of the funding, but CEO Ive did not comment on this.
CEO Ive is a genius designer who designed Apple's flagship products such as the iPhone, iPod, and iPad, and was a key figure in leading Steve Jobs and Apple's golden era. He left Apple in 2019 and founded the design company 'LoveFrom,' worked as an Apple consultant for several years, and completely departed in 2022.
