Regarding the record-breaking autumn heavy rain that caused casualties and property damage across the country over the weekend, Professor Kim Hae-dong of the Department of Earth Environmental Studies at Keimyung University explained, "Flooding has often occurred in autumn, but this time, combined with a typhoon, an extraordinary rainfall with a 200-year return period occurred." He warned that although one or two cold spells will come, high temperatures close to 30 degrees Celsius will continue at least until early November, and there is a possibility of an unprecedented cold wave in winter.

On the 23rd, Professor Kim revealed this on CBS Radio's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show,' explaining, "Usually, more rain falls after the summer monsoon season, around the autumn monsoon period, than during the summer monsoon itself." According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters' heavy rain response report from the previous day, about 1,500 people were evacuated in seven provinces and cities including Busan, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk due to this heavy rain.

On the morning of the 18th, the temperature in Seoul was 27 degrees Celsius, but today (the 23rd) it is 17 degrees. After a record-breaking heatwave, the temperature suddenly dropped sharply in just five days. However, Professor Kim said it would be difficult to see a typical autumn this year. He explained, "Although it feels like autumn has arrived suddenly as it cools down from the heatwave, temperatures close to 30 degrees will continue from tomorrow (the 24th). Daytime temperatures in living spaces or outdoors will exceed 30 degrees."

Professor Kim pointed out that autumn has almost disappeared based on data from the past 10 years. He said, "The heat will continue until early November, then it is expected to suddenly get cold."

Regarding upcoming autumn and winter typhoons, he predicted that even if typhoons form, they are likely to pass over the Japanese archipelago or south of it. He added, "It is predicted that no typhoons will come up to our country from now on." Professor Kim also warned that a cold wave will rage this winter. He said, "In 2021 and 2022, there were extreme cold waves with temperatures dropping below minus 18 degrees Celsius," and "This winter is expected to experience a cold wave similar to those in 2021 and 2022."
