"Dyeing a perfectly healthy dog pink"... Beckham's son and his wife boasted, then faced backlash

Animal dyeing can cause severe allergic reactions in dogs
Netizens have mixed views on the practice

Brooklyn Beckham, the son of British football star David Beckham, has sparked controversy over animal abuse after revealing that his dog was dyed pink all over its body. Recently, Brooklyn Beckham shared a TikTok video featuring himself and his wife Nicola Peltz. The video showed their pet dog with its fur dyed pink all over.

The dog is believed to have originally had white fur, but in the video, its entire coat was dyed pink, with its ears and legs dyed orange. This image of the dog quickly spread across online communities. Netizens from around the world who saw the video criticized the couple in comments such as "What on earth did you do to the dog?", "The dog looks sad," "Are they treating the dog like a toy?", and "You shouldn't do this to animals who can't speak." Some users also expressed concerns about the potential negative health effects of the dyeing procedure on the dog.

Animal dyeing has consistently been at the center of animal abuse controversies. Unlike human skin, which is mildly acidic, dog skin is close to neutral, so even the gentlest dyes can damage the coat and make dogs more susceptible to bacterial infections. Especially since dogs tend to lick their fur, there is concern that the toxicity of the dye could enter their bodies.

PETA stated that hair dye can cause severe allergic reactions or stress in companion dogs, and in some cases, they may suffer burns or be exposed to toxins.

Most netizens are also negative about animal dyeing. They claim it is "clear animal abuse" on online communities and call for "punishment of the dog owners" and say "they should have the same done to their own bodies." The international animal rights organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has also warned that dyeing can be dangerous for pets. PETA states that dyes can cause severe allergic reactions or stress in dogs, and in some cases, may lead to burns or toxin exposure. For these reasons, the UK Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) advises, "Pet owners should know that there is no proven safe method for dyeing animals" and emphasizes that "animals are not toys or accessories."

On the other hand, some argue that since there are dyes made from natural ingredients, it may not be a big problem and premature criticism should be avoided. One netizen claimed, "Dyeing a pet to make it look pretty is like dressing up a cute child," and added, "Would those who criticize this also accuse parents who dress their children in cute clothes of child abuse?"
