"Rescued by 119... Car Lost as It Was Swept Away by Water"

A heavy rain warning was issued in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, where a road was flooded, and a man was seen climbing onto the hood of a car, drawing attention.

On the 21st, an online community and social media posted a post titled "Gimhae Real-time Genesis Ajusshi 2." In the photo in the post, a man wearing a black T-shirt is sitting on the hood of a car, surrounded by muddy water. The only visible objects around are utility poles and wires, and the car itself is submerged halfway in water.

The author of the post said the photo was taken in Naedeok-dong, Gimhae, Gyeongnam, explaining, "There is an underpass in front of the road and a mountain beside it, so the water suddenly rose, causing damage." Netizens gave the man in the photo the nickname "The Second Seocho-dong Sage." The "Seocho-dong Sage" refers to a man who sat resignedly on top of a Genesis G80 vehicle when the Gangnam area of Seoul was flooded by heavy rain in 2022. The post author seems to have used the phrase "Genesis Ajusshi 2" in the title, knowing this situation.

Netizens also expressed concern about whether the man was rescued. Later, a friend of the "Gimhae Ajusshi," Mr. A, appeared and shared the backstory. He introduced himself through an online community as "a friend who runs a fruit store with the man in the photo on Geumgwan-daero in Gimhae." He added, "The situation was actually more urgent, so it’s not something to laugh about, but it made me smile a little," and said, "The 119 rescue team quickly rescued my friend."

Mr. A also revealed that the car the man was on belonged to someone else. He explained the situation at the time, saying, "The car in the photo is an Avante that was parked firmly and did not float away for some unknown reason. My friend was swept away with his car but climbed onto the parked Avante, and the photo was taken then." He continued, "Interestingly, my friend’s car was indeed a Genesis, but it floated away in the water and was lost," adding, "It’s still raining now, so we’ll have to look for it later."

Finally, Mr. A took the opportunity to apologize and thank the owner of the Avante, saying, "I’m sorry for climbing on your car without permission, and thanks to it, my friend survived." He also said, "Most of the cars were submerged and swept away in this flood, which was despairing, but thanks to this, I smiled a little."

Meanwhile, a heavy rain warning was issued across the entire Gyeongnam region that day. The Gyeongnam Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters announced that the average rainfall in the Gyeongnam area from midnight the previous day to 6 p.m. that day was 207 mm. Gimhae recorded 367.5 mm of rainfall, and Changwon had the highest at 464.2 mm. The cause of this heavy rain is known to be a weakened tropical depression from Typhoon Pulasan.
