Trees Fall and Roads Flooded... 'Water Bomb' Hits Gyeongnam in Autumn Downpour

Due to the impact of Typhoon Pulasan No. 14, strong winds and heavy rain swept across the country, and a significant amount of rain poured down overnight in Gyeongnam as well.


According to the Gyeongnam Fire Department and Changwon Fire Department, as of 7:30 a.m. on the 21st, there had been 119 reports of damage caused by the rain.


Strong winds and rain caused flooding on roads and in parking lots, water entered both inside and outside buildings, trees were toppled, and rocks rolled down onto the roads, resulting in a series of damages.


Fire authorities drained water from roads, buildings, and parking lots, rescued residents trapped in flooded vehicles, and cleared fallen trees.


No other casualties were reported.

According to the Gyeongnam Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, the average rainfall from the 20th to 7 a.m. on the 21st reached 120.3 mm.


Changwon recorded the highest rainfall with 309.8 mm, followed by Goseong with 232 mm, Sacheon with 215.0 mm, Yangsan with 149.3 mm, Gimhae with 135.2 mm, Jinju with 131.6 mm, Sancheong with 108.5 mm, and Hadong with 104.0 mm.


Namhae had 96.4 mm, Geoje 90.0 mm, Miryang 87.4 mm, Hapcheon 85.3 mm, Tongyeong 78.8 mm, Hamyang 75.3 mm, Uiryeong 75.4 mm, Geochang 57.0 mm, and Changnyeong 46.5 mm.


On the night of the 20th at around 11:20 p.m., Gyeongnam Province raised its emergency response level to stage 2 and deployed 2,768 public officials to prepare for heavy rain and flooding.


Access was restricted to 171 Sewolgyo bridges, 41 riverside walking trails, 14 river-bottom roads, 1 road, 15 riverside parking lots, 8 campsites, as well as coastal areas, beaches, valleys, and fishing spots.


Residents in landslide and leakage risk areas, including 242 people in Changwon (such as the Deokdong area), 1 in Hapcheon, and 3 in Jinju, were evacuated.


Gyeongnam Province expects up to more than 180 mm of rain in some areas until the 22nd, and plans to closely monitor weather conditions, strengthen preemptive controls, evacuate residents as needed, and enhance response measures according to each stage.
