A consulting agent who collected a contract deposit by promising to allow insurance promotion events at a mart was sentenced to prison.
According to the legal community on the 21st, Judge Lee Ho-dong of the Criminal Division 3 at the Seoul Eastern District Court sentenced Mr. A (53), a mart startup consulting agent indicted on fraud charges, to one year in prison. For the case of not delivering the cost of installing international flags at the mart, he was sentenced to two months in prison.
Mr. A is accused of embezzling about 40 million won from victim Mr. B by promising that all marts opening through his consulting firm from May 2021 to November of the following year would be allowed to hold insurance promotion events. However, Mr. A had no such authority, and he planned to use the money received from Mr. B for debt repayment and living expenses.
Mr. A is also charged with deceiving interior construction contractor Mr. C by promising to arrange construction contracts for two marts in Gimpo and Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, without brokerage fees, and receiving free interior service for his consulting firm's office. Mr. A proposed to Mr. C that he would connect the marts he was consulting with service contracts and that Mr. C could recover the cost of office construction materials from the advance payments received there. Mr. C carried out about 12 million won worth of construction, including partition work, for Mr. A's office. However, the mart in Gimpo was in a suspended operation state at the time, making the implementation of construction uncertain. Mr. A received about 30 million won, including construction fees, from the mart owner but did not pay Mr. C the 20.8 million won construction fee.
The court explained the sentencing reason, stating, "The defendant deceived the victims and embezzled a considerable amount of money and has not repaid it."
