Secured 14.7 Billion KRW in National Funds, 29.5 Billion KRW to Be Invested for Completion by 2028
Selected for Consecutive National Projects Following Hydrogen Pilot City, First in the Country
Ulsan City has solidified its position as a leading hydrogen city by successfully completing the nation's first hydrogen pilot city project and being selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 'Hydrogen City Development Project' public offering.
In particular, Ulsan is the first city in the country to be selected for both the hydrogen pilot city project and the hydrogen city development project, both overseen by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The Hydrogen City Development Project aims to promote the hydrogen economy and achieve carbon neutrality by expanding hydrogen infrastructure at the city level and utilizing hydrogen in daily life.
With this selection, Ulsan City plans to invest a total of 29.5 billion KRW, including 14.75 billion KRW in national funds, over four years to establish a differentiated Ulsan-style hydrogen city in the Buk-gu area and the Ulsan Mipo National Industrial Complex.
The Ulsan-style hydrogen city initiative will be promoted as an expansion project linked to the hydrogen pilot city project.
The Buk-gu area will focus on expanding future hydrogen mobility solutions tailored to local conditions, while the Ulsan Mipo National Industrial Complex will focus on meeting industrial demand.
The main project will first establish a hydrogen pipeline network for hydrogen supply.
A total of 11.9 km of hydrogen pipelines will be constructed, including 6.7 km from Hyomun Intersection to Gyeong Hydrogen Charging Station and 5.2 km from the front gate of Hyundai Motor Company Plant 5 to the Ulsan Mipo National Industrial Complex (HD Hyundai Heavy Industries), to achieve carbon neutrality and strengthen the competitiveness of local companies.
Direct hydrogen supply to hydrogen charging stations will also be promoted. Hydrogen will be supplied via pipeline to three hydrogen charging stations?Hydrogen Tram Line 2, Gyeong Hydrogen Charging Station, and Gyeongdong Hydrogen Charging Station?to proactively respond to stable and uninterrupted large-scale hydrogen charging demands.
Additionally, a regionally specialized project will be carried out to demonstrate the innovative technology of the nation's first hydrogen tractor.
In collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company, Ulsan will develop the nation's first operational hydrogen tractor and operate three units on long-distance freight logistics routes between Ulsan and Seoul/Incheon, utilizing regulatory exemptions (sandbox).
In particular, by developing core technologies domestically, the city aims to encourage the transition of large diesel-based imported trucks to domestic eco-friendly vehicles, thereby advancing the domestic eco-friendly vehicle industry in the logistics sector.
The city will also work to advance a customized integrated safety and operation system. To secure a leading position in the global hydrogen market, a real-time monitoring system will be established at the Yuldong District Hydrogen Integrated Safety Management Center to verify the safety of 'hydrogen production-transportation-utilization.' Through this, Ulsan will promote the status and safety of hydrogen utilization in the city to its citizens.
Ulsan City plans to complete a comprehensive plan and detailed facility plans for the hydrogen city development project by October next year and finish the project by 2028, further solidifying its status as a leading hydrogen city.
Mayor Kim Dukyum stated, "Ulsan declared its vision to become the world's leading hydrogen city by 2030 in 2019 and has since implemented various policies and projects. Building on these achievements, from next year, we will do our utmost to create jobs, reduce energy costs, and revitalize the economy through the Ulsan-style hydrogen city, as well as accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral society."
Ulsan City was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's public offering in 2019 and successfully completed the hydrogen pilot city project in June this year.
The hydrogen pipeline (188 km) established around the industrial complex was connected from Taehwagang Station to the Yul-dong Combined Heat and Power Plant in Buk-gu Yangjeong-dong (10.5 km). Electricity produced with hydrogen at the Yul-dong Combined Heat and Power Plant is sold to KEPCO, and heat is supplied to 437 households in the Yul-dong District apartment complex for hot water and heating, realizing the 'world's first carbon-neutral hydrogen apartment.'
In addition, the hydrogen pipeline was connected to hydrogen bus and hydrogen tram charging stations centered around Taehwagang Station, establishing the foundation for an eco-friendly hydrogen city transportation system and successfully completing the hydrogen pilot city project.
