President Yoon Suk-yeol departed on the morning of the 19th for an official visit to the Czech Republic.
President Yoon and his wife, Kim Keon-hee, boarded the presidential aircraft, Air Force One, at Seongnam Seoul Airport to begin their diplomatic trip.
This overseas trip marks President Yoon's third foreign visit this year, following his visits to the three Central Asian countries and the United States for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit. During the tight 4-day, 2-night schedule, he will hold a series of meetings with Czech President Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Petr Fiala to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Through this visit, President Yoon aims to solidify the 24 trillion won Czech nuclear power plant project, for which his administration was selected as the preferred bidder in July, and significantly enhance cooperation with the Czech Republic not only in nuclear power but also in advanced technology, trade, and supply chains.
Accompanying him is an economic delegation of 50 to 60 members, including the heads of the four major conglomerates for the first time this year, raising expectations for tangible economic achievements.
In a written interview with Reuters ahead of the Czech visit, President Yoon stated, "We will closely communicate with the Czech government to ensure the final contract is smoothly concluded and the project is successfully completed. Above all, the success of the new Czech nuclear power project is paramount."
Regarding intellectual property (IP) disputes with American nuclear company Westinghouse and others, he said, "The governments of South Korea and the United States are working to foster a friendly atmosphere between the companies, and I believe this will lead to an amicable resolution of disputes between the two countries' companies."
He added, "Under the firm foundation of the South Korea-U.S. alliance, there is a strong consensus on the necessity of nuclear cooperation between the two countries. There is no need to worry about the nuclear power project."
At the airport, President Yoon and Mrs. Kim greeted Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon, floor leader Choo Kyung-ho, Presidential Secretary General Jeong Jin-seok, Senior Secretary for Political Affairs Hong Cheol-ho, and Acting Czech Ambassador to South Korea Jana Symbolincova, who came to see them off.
President Yoon shook hands with Leader Han, and Mrs. Kim exchanged bows with him.
