Super Typhoon 'Yagi' Hits Southeast Asia, Damage Snowballs... Death Toll Exceeds 500

226 Deaths in Myanmar and 291 Deaths in Vietnam

Damage caused by Super Typhoon Yagi, the 11th typhoon to hit Southeast Asia, is worsening. Although Yagi weakened into a tropical depression and dissipated, aftershocks such as floods and landslides have continued, resulting in over 500 deaths in the Southeast Asian region.

According to the AP News on the 18th, the Myanmar military regime announced the previous day that at least 226 people died and 77 went missing due to floods caused by Yagi. More than 160,000 houses were damaged, and 240,000 people were displaced. Livestock and other 13,000 animals died, and over 259,000 hectares of farmland were damaged.

Due to communication outages caused by civil war and floods, many victims have not been accounted for, and the death toll is expected to rise further.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that about 631,000 people across Myanmar have been affected by the floods. OCHA reported that urgent support for food, drinking water, and medicine is needed for flood victims, but relief efforts are being hindered as roads and bridges have been destroyed and clashes between the Myanmar military and rebel forces continue.

In Vietnam, the death toll from Yagi is approaching 300. The Vietnamese disaster authorities announced the previous day that 291 people died and 38 went missing due to the typhoon, floods, and landslides. 235,000 houses were damaged, and the affected farmland exceeds 300,000 hectares.

As of the previous day, the death toll in Myanmar and Vietnam alone was counted at 517. Earlier, 21 people died and 26 went missing in the Philippines as well.
