Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump emphasized at a public event held after experiencing his second assassination attempt this year that "only important presidents get shot."
On the 17th (local time), Trump made this remark at a town hall event held at the Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan, one of the key battleground states, saying, "The presidency is a dangerous business."
On the 15th, Trump was nearly shot by a man in his 50s who targeted him while he was playing golf in Florida. This was the second assassination attempt on Trump this year, following an incident in July when he was shot during a campaign event in Pennsylvania and injured his ear.
At the event, Trump described the situation as "an incredible experience," adding, "People think car racing is dangerous, and rodeo events are a bit scary, but that's not the case. This (the presidency) is the dangerous job."
Trump also mentioned that he received condolence calls from President Joe Biden the day before and from his presidential rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, on the day of the event, describing the conversations as "very good and appreciated."
Nevertheless, Trump emphasized, "We have to take our country back," and "We have to win (the November election)." He also announced plans to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will visit the U.S. next week, without disclosing specific times or locations.
Meanwhile, the gap in approval ratings between Trump and Vice President Harris has widened following the presidential TV debate. According to a poll conducted by Morning Consult from the 13th to the 15th, surveying 11,022 voters nationwide and released on the 17th (with a margin of error of ±1%p), Harris recorded 51% support, while Trump had 45%. This gap has increased compared to the 3% difference before the first TV debate on the 10th.
U.S. media outlets believe that this second assassination attempt on Trump is unlikely to boost his approval ratings as the first incident did.
