47 Classes of 5th and 6th Graders from 14 Elementary Schools Participate
AI Education Programs Linked to Desired Subjects by School Conducted
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it will operate an artificial intelligence (AI) education program called ‘Geumcheon Future Science Classroom Visiting Schools’ for elementary school students in the area from September 19 to December.
This program was prepared to induce students' understanding and interest in artificial intelligence through AI programs linked to school subjects. In addition, professional instructors visit schools directly to increase student participation and accessibility.
About 1,000 students from 47 classes of 5th and 6th grades in 14 elementary schools in the area will participate, with classes conducted in 2 sessions per class (2 periods per session).
The participating schools applied for one subject among art, physical education, practical arts, and music based on a prior demand survey for linked subjects conducted at each school.
The art subject consists of a first session learning about the harmony between artworks and artificial intelligence, and a second session program creating a personalized character using generative AI.
In physical education, the first session uses a posture recognition machine (Teachable Machine) to learn about the relationship between sports and artificial intelligence, and the second session involves creating a motion recognition running game.
In practical arts, the first session covers carbon neutrality and environmental protection, followed by a tree-growing program in the second session. The music subject includes experiencing Google ‘Music Lab’ ‘Composing with Doodle Bach’ in the first session, and playing the piano using an AI program in the second session.
This program is the second program following the ‘Gwacheon Science Museum Exploration Program linked with local children’s centers’ in August as part of the Geumcheon Future Science Classroom project. The district has reorganized education from drone and coding-focused to the latest science and technology-centered education such as artificial intelligence and ChatGPT starting this year to quickly respond to strengthening future talent capabilities.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “Through the ‘Geumcheon Future Science Classroom,’ I hope elementary students will feel familiar with basic AI technology and cultivate integrative thinking across various subjects so that they can grow as leaders of future society by operating the latest science education.”
After November, the Geumcheon Future Science Camp is also scheduled, where students will explore various occupations and their career paths using AI programs over two days with professional instructors.
