Swift Supports Harris and Encourages Voting
Increase in Battleground Registrations... Likely to Affect Voting
Donald Trump, the former U.S. president and Republican presidential candidate, directly targeted global pop star Taylor Swift, who supported his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.
On the 15th (local time), former President Trump emphasized on his social media platform 'Truth Social' by writing, "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT." Earlier, Swift publicly endorsed Democratic candidate Vice President Harris on Instagram after the presidential debate on the 10th. Swift explained her support for Harris by saying, "Harris fights for rights and causes," adding, "We need a warrior to fight for these." She further stated, "I believe (Harris) is a stable and talented leader, and if this country is led with calmness rather than chaos, we will achieve more." Swift also encouraged her 400 million social media followers to vote.
In fact, following Swift's encouragement, thousands of her fans reportedly registered as voters in battleground states. Foreign media outlets such as CNN analyzed that Swift's support could influence the votes in key swing states. As such, with assessments emerging that Swift's endorsement of Vice President Harris could impact voting, former President Trump is interpreted to have directly targeted Swift through social media. Additionally, AFP news agency interpreted Trump's post by saying, "It is unclear what Trump hopes to gain by attacking Swift, but he might be calculating that any publicity is better than none."
After Trump's direct social media attack, supporters of Trump continued to spread falsehoods and mock Swift, prompting Swift's fans to respond by posting messages and hashtags such as "I LOVE YOU TAYLOR SWIFT" and "I HATE DONALD TRUMP" on social media.
Meanwhile, on the same day, a shooting incident targeting Trump occurred at the 'Trump International Golf Club' in Florida. This is the second assassination attempt following one in July. The New York Times (NYT) reported that the suspect who aimed a gun at former President Trump is a 58-year-old man named Ryan Wesley Root from Hawaii, and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the exact circumstances of the incident. Trump's post targeting Swift was uploaded before the shooting incident.
