On the 16th, a post titled "Had a confrontation with a woman smoking while refueling" was uploaded to an online community. The author, Mr. A, noticed a woman, Ms. B, smoking while refueling and recorded a video as evidence. He then approached Ms. B and pointed out, "How can you smoke while refueling?" However, Ms. B did not put out her cigarette but walked a bit further and continued smoking.
Mr. A said, "When I told her to put out the cigarette again, she got annoyed, put it out, and then argued back outrageously, yelling about why I spoke to her that way." When Mr. A asked, "Will you take responsibility if the gas station explodes?" Ms. B replied, "I will take responsibility." When Mr. A asked again, "How will you take responsibility?" Ms. B reportedly shouted and got angry.
Mr. A said, "I immediately reported it to the police, but they said it was not their jurisdiction and advised me to report it to the National Police Agency’s online complaint system." He added, "I heard the fine was revised to up to 5 million won, but it seems ineffective. I want to impose a fine to teach her a lesson."
Netizens who saw this reacted with comments such as, "I hope she realizes how dangerous this is this time," "It’s ridiculous that the fine is only 5 million won when the damage could be much greater if an accident occurs," "Gas stations often have explosion accidents, so engines are turned off during refueling, but smoking in front of the pump is unbelievable," "The procedure should be changed so the police can crack down immediately," and "It’s best to report it to the National Police Agency’s online complaint system first."
According to the revised 'Hazardous Materials Safety Control Act' effective July 31, 2024, smoking is prohibited in all hazardous material storage and handling facilities, including gas stations. Violators may be fined up to 5 million won. Additionally, facility managers must install signs indicating no-smoking zones.
