US YouTuber Nick K Caught in Heavy Rain on Ulleungdo
Helps with Recovery Work Carrying Neokkarae and Shovel
A foreign YouTuber captured on camera the record-breaking heavy rain that hit Ulleungdo for the first time in 46 years, drawing attention. In particular, this YouTuber earned praise from netizens by personally grabbing a shovel and heading out to the city flood recovery site, which was devastated by rainwater and debris.
Nick K, an American YouTuber and explorer with about 200,000 subscribers, posted a video titled "Shocked upon arriving at Ulleungdo" on his channel on the 13th.
On that day, he shared his experience of encountering heavy rain during his YouTuber tour. In fact, Ulleungdo was turned into chaos as a record-breaking 300mm of heavy rain fell from the previous day until that day. It was reported to be the highest rainfall in 46 years on record.
Nick was speechless when he saw muddy water pouring down the slope as soon as he got off at the ferry terminal. He exclaimed in shock, "I have no idea what on earth is happening here," and hurried toward the city.
However, the city center was equally devastated. Main roads and buildings were swept away by debris, and puddles filled various parts of the roads. Citizens carrying umbrellas and raincoats struggled to move forward, and vehicles stood still in the middle of the roads. Nick chuckled, saying, "Look at the streets. They're covered with mud, branches, and piles of stones," adding, "Even the police station was a mess."
After several hours, flood recovery teams equipped with heavy construction machinery began to be deployed on the streets. Nick meticulously captured the scenes of workers clearing debris and piles of stones against the rain, and public officials sweeping the streets, all striving to restore the city.
He praised, "Can you believe this place was just a chaotic mess covered in dirt heaps a little while ago? This was literally 'Ground Zero,' but people with tractors, excavators, and cargo trucks finally started cleaning the streets."
He added, "Some streets are still messy, but if you walk around the city a bit, you'll realize it's cleaner than you think." As a foreign traveler, Nick personally took a shovel and broom and helped clean the streets alongside other public officials.
Netizens who watched the video showered praise, saying, "Thank you for sharing the situation in Ulleungdo. Unfortunately, it seems you went to Ulleungdo the day right after the worst heavy rain," "Thank you for helping the citizens of Ulleungdo even though it's not your hometown and you came just for travel," "You are truly a wonderful and righteous person," and "Wishing you a safe and enjoyable trip."
