On the 12th, one day before the deadline for early admission applications for medical schools in the 2025 academic year, nearly 16 times the number of applicants compared to the number of available spots applied.

According to the data compiled by the application agency UwayApply as of 6 p.m. that day, 47,167 applicants applied to early admission at 39 medical schools nationwide. Considering that the number of available spots at these schools is 2,978 (excluding some social consideration and balanced opportunity admissions), the average competition rate was 15.83 to 1.


Among them, the total number of applicants for the regional talent admission track was 12,357. This is eight times the number of available spots (1,549). The Cha University of Medicine, a graduate medical school, was excluded from this statistic.


Early admission applications for university entrance are being accepted for at least three days at each university from the 9th to the 13th of this month.


Excluding the special admission track for overseas Koreans and foreigners (29 spots), the total number of students selected through early admission at 39 medical schools is 3,089. Among 26 medical schools outside the metropolitan area, 1,549 spots are recruited through the regional talent admission track.


Applications for Seoul National University and Korea University closed the day before, and on this day, Yonsei University (Seoul) and Ewha Womans University also ended their application periods. The remaining 35 medical schools will accept applications until the final day, the 13th.


The competition rate for Yonsei University (Seoul) College of Medicine, which closed on this day, was recorded at 14.29 to 1, an increase from 10.57 to 1 a year ago.


By admission type, the competition rate for Yonsei University (Seoul) College of Medicine’s student record-based recommendation track was 10.2 to 1, and the student record comprehensive (activity excellence) track was 14.29 to 1.


Both rates increased compared to last year (student record recommendation 6.5 to 1, student record comprehensive 11.33 to 1).


Following Seoul National University (12.66 to 1 → 13.56 to 1) and Korea University (27.04 to 1 → 30.55 to 1), the so-called 'SKY' medical schools all saw an increase in competition rates compared to a year ago. The total competition rate for these three universities’ medical schools rose from 16.34 to 1 to 18.82 to 1.


The competition rate for Ewha Womans University College of Medicine (operating only the future talent admission track), which also closed on this day, ended at 16.39, down from 20.85 to 1 last year.


Among all medical school admission tracks, the highest competition rate was recorded by Sungkyunkwan University’s essay excellence track (293 to 1). This was followed by Inha University’s essay excellence track (162.58 to 1), Gachon University’s essay track (141.3 to 1), Catholic University’s essay track (120.42 to 1), Chung-Ang University’s essay track (111.5 to 1), and Kyung Hee University’s essay excellence track (101.47 to 1). There were six tracks with competition rates exceeding 100 to 1.
