Attendance at the Environmental Leaders Forum Hosted by the Korean Academy of Environmental Sciences
"Water and Power Supply Crucial for Semiconductor Cluster Success"
Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, emphasized the necessity of exempting the preliminary feasibility study for the integrated pipeline project to supply industrial water for the success of the advanced semiconductor specialized complex being promoted in Yongin.
Mayor Lee made this statement on the afternoon of the 11th at Melon Hall, EL Tower, Yangjae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, attending the '65th Environmental Leaders Forum' hosted by the Korea Environmental Academy.

Held under the theme of 'Fostering the Semiconductor National Strategic Industry and Water Environment Policy,' the forum was organized to discuss ways to secure industrial water necessary for the Yongin semiconductor cluster industrial complex and to present policy alternatives regarding the overall impact on the water environment. About 100 people attended the forum, including Mayor Lee, Heo Tak, Chairman of the Korea Environmental Academy, Kim Myung-ja, Chairperson of KAIST, Kwak Gyeol-ho, President of the Korea Water Forum, and Lee Kyu-yong, Standing Advisor of Kim & Chang Law Office.
Mayor Lee stated, "The I-dong and Namsa advanced system semiconductor national industrial complexes will house Samsung Electronics and over 150 semiconductor materials, parts, equipment, and design companies, and nearby, a semiconductor-backed new town with 16,000 households is being developed, making the smooth supply of industrial water, domestic water, and electricity crucial."
He added, "SK Hynix is also conducting civil engineering works for the Yongin semiconductor cluster, investing 122 trillion won on 1.26 million pyeong in Wonsam-myeon, and will begin construction of the first production line next spring. We are pursuing exemption from the preliminary feasibility study to smoothly promote the supply of industrial water through an integrated pipeline to the two industrial complexes."
Mayor Lee explained, "If both sites operate as planned, the required water volume will be about 1.34 million tons per day. We are closely cooperating with the government to ensure that this enormous amount of industrial water can be secured smoothly."
Meanwhile, at the forum, Kim Sung-hyo, Head of the Water Supply Planning Department at Korea Water Resources Corporation, gave a presentation on 'National Semiconductor Industry Policy and Water Supply Measures,' and Hwang Ho-song, Executive Director at Samsung Electronics, spoke on 'Samsung Semiconductor's Eco-friendly Management Strategy and Water Resource Management.'
