Taking leftover ice to store fish... Market vendors' absurd reuse

A fish shop in a market located in Daegu has sparked controversy after footage surfaced showing the reuse of discarded ice.

On the 11th, a post titled "Shocking Reuse of Ice Discarded as Trash at Daegu ○○ Market" quickly spread across online communities. The original poster on 'Bobaedream' stated, "An unbelievable incident that happened at a fish shop on the basement level 1," adding, "In the COVID-19 era, unsanitary drinks containing people's saliva and foreign substances, as well as leftover ice, should be discarded like at fast food restaurants or convenience stores."

The video embedded in the post shows an elderly woman wearing a mask and apron inside the fish shop. She is seen retrieving a disposable cup, apparently discarded after being used, from a trash bin. After pouring out the remaining drink and ice into the drain, she scraped the ice alone and put it back into the cup. The woman then transferred the collected ice into an icebox containing fish. Judging by the amount of ice in the box, it is presumed that she repeated this process several times.

Chosun.com reported, "The footage was filmed around April to May, and it was confirmed that the establishment had previously been fined for handling ice unsanitarily." A representative from Daegu Jung-gu Office told Chosun.com, "A report was filed in May regarding the fish shop in the video, and a fine of 1 million KRW was imposed for violating the Food Sanitation Act. We conducted two more on-site inspections afterward but found no violations." However, due to the spread of the video, complaints have been received, and plans are underway to conduct another inspection of the establishment.

Netizens who saw the video and post responded with comments such as, "Their hygiene awareness is really at rock bottom," "I don't know what they think of their customers," and "This is an unreasonable behavior."
