"Don't Smoke at Home"... 30-Year-Old Son Wields Weapon After Father's Warning

A man in his 30s was arrested for stabbing his father with a weapon after being scolded for smoking inside the house.

The Uijeongbu Police Department in Gyeonggi announced on the 11th that they are investigating a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, who was apprehended on the 10th on suspicion of attempted patricide.

Mr. A is accused of stabbing his father, Mr. B, in the neck with a weapon at a residence in Howon-dong, Uijeongbu City, at 7:15 a.m. on the 7th. Mr. B sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Fortunately, his life is not in danger.

During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly stated that he committed the crime out of anger because his father told him to stop smoking inside the house.

According to the police, Mr. A has been suffering from schizophrenia for 10 years. After further investigation, the police plan to send Mr. A to the prosecution.

Meanwhile, under current law (Criminal Act Article 250, murder and patricide), a person who commits murder is subject to the death penalty, life imprisonment, or imprisonment for at least five years. In the case of attempted murder, punishment is determined by considering factors such as intent. Generally, the sentence for attempted murder is about half of that for the corresponding murder charge.
