Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Expands Supply of Yellow Croaker and Hairtail to Control Holiday Prices

Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kang Do-hyung Visits Noryangjin Fish Market... On-site Inspection of Seafood Prices

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 11th that it will supply government stockpiles of yellow croaker and dried yellow croaker to stably manage seafood prices during the Chuseok holiday.

Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Expands Supply of Yellow Croaker and Hairtail to Control Holiday Prices Kang Do-hyung, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, inspected seafood prices and consumption trends at the Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market in Seoul on the 11th. He held a meeting with the President of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives and representatives of merchants. Minister Kang toured seafood retail stores to observe price trends, purchased seafood directly using Onnuri gift certificates, and checked whether the refund event was being properly conducted.

According to the Ministry, prices of yellow croaker and dried yellow croaker, which have not yet reached their production season due to the early Chuseok this year, are somewhat high. As of the 10th, the consumer price of yellow croaker was 1,508 KRW per fish, about 23.2% higher than the week before last year's Chuseok.

In response, the Ministry explained that during the Chuseok countermeasure period, it is supplying government stockpiles (160 tons of yellow croaker, totaling 13,000 tons) and conducting online and offline discount events with the largest budget ever. Starting this week, the discount rate for yellow croaker at major supermarkets has been raised from 50% to up to 60%, and a "Chuseok Livelihood Gift Set," which includes dried yellow croaker at about half the regular price, is also being sold through the Suhyup online mall and others.

Prices and supply of hairtail fish are also being stably managed. According to the Ministry, due to the expanded release of government stockpiled seafood, the price of hairtail fish recorded 14,383 KRW (refrigerated large size), about 6.2% lower than the week before last year's Chuseok. Kang Do-hyung, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, visited the Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market in Seoul on the same day and said, "To ease the burden on Chuseok shopping baskets, we are managing prices through the release of government stockpiles and various discount events." He added, "We will closely monitor seafood supply and price trends until Chuseok and do our best to enable consumers to purchase seafood at affordable prices."
