Jongno-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jeong Munheon) is promoting the ‘Integrated Safety Smart Pole Construction Project’ in the district’s school zones to create safe and secure routes for children going to and from school.
The target locations are four sites including Independence Gate Jaedong Hyoje Elementary School and Gyeongun School, with completion scheduled for November this year. In March, the district was selected for the Seoul City Integrated Safety Smart Pole Construction Project and secured city funding. To create safe school routes, the district is consolidating and newly installing poles that were previously installed individually in the district’s school zones.
When installing the smart poles, existing individual installations such as mirrors, security closed-circuit televisions (CCTV), illegal parking enforcement CCTVs, and vehicle-pedestrian traffic signals are integrated into one, improving the city’s aesthetics.
Additionally, by the end of this month, the district will conduct ‘Bicycle and Personal Mobility (PM) Safety Education’ at nine locations including Seoul National University Elementary School, Hyehwa Elementary School, Baehwa Kindergarten, and Gyeongbok High School. By November, the district plans to complete the installation of additional speed enforcement cameras around the Hyehwa Elementary School school zone.
Meanwhile, to create a safe school environment, Jongno-gu completed the ‘School Zone 532 Project’ in March around Maedong Elementary School, which included the installation of traffic safety facilities and changes to the traffic system. The newly introduced solar-powered LED yellow crosswalk signs are notable for their color, design, and functionality.
District Mayor Jeong Munheon emphasized, “We will focus on securing the safety of children and residents by expanding integrated safety smart poles and traffic safety facilities in the district’s school zones, while also conducting related education.”
