29 Drug Offenders Arrested with Participation from 7 Countries
The National Police Agency announced on the 11th that, through a joint international cooperation operation with Interpol, it has seized synthetic drugs worth approximately 1.4 trillion won (estimated by Interpol) across Southeast Asia.
This operation targeted the Golden Triangle region, a major production area of drugs entering South Korea, at the request of the Korean National Police Agency. Seven countries?South Korea, the United States, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Australia?carried out the operation from July 22 to August 7. As a result, 29 drug offenders were arrested, and synthetic drugs worth about 1.4 trillion won were seized.
J?rgen Stock, Secretary-General of Interpol, emphasized, “Through this operation, we were able to understand the methods drug suppliers use to smuggle synthetic drugs and precursor substances, and collaboration through Interpol facilitated real-time information exchange among participating countries.”
The National Police Agency exchanged information in real time with participating countries, apprehended a key suspect supplying drugs from Thailand to South Korea, and is currently cooperating on cases such as the smuggling of 16 kg of methamphetamine disguised in a commercial food mixer.
Lee Jun-hyung, International Cooperation Officer of the National Police Agency, said, “This achievement was made possible through close cooperation with the Interpol General Secretariat and member countries,” adding, “We expect that cooperation against drug crimes will become even more active in the future.”
