Ministry of the Interior and Safety and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Jointly Hold 'Design Improvement Forum'
October National Idea Contest... Deriving Results Reflecting Opinions

Discussions among related government ministries to change the design of the Resident Registration Card will begin. This is to consider the necessity and direction of improving the design of the Resident Registration Card, and the government plans to launch a public idea contest next month.

On the 10th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it will hold a forum with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Craft and Design Foundation, and others to discuss the need for improving the design of Korea's representative identification card, the Resident Registration Card. Previously, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism formed a joint public-private 'Resident Registration Card Improvement Promotion Committee.'

The forum scheduled for the 11th will be conducted with participation from experts in various fields such as design and history, as well as interested citizens. First, Professor Kim Su-jeong (Department of Design, Seoul National University), who was in charge of improving the next-generation passport design, will give a keynote speech titled "Public Design in My Hand." Afterwards, Kim Kwon-jeong, a research officer at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, will cover the history of Korea's identification system from the Joseon Dynasty's hopae to the mobile Resident Registration Card to be implemented by the end of the year. Then, design critic Choi Beom will discuss "The Nature and Direction of Resident Registration Card Design as Public Design."

Additionally, presentations will be made on ▲"The Symbolic Image the Resident Registration Card Should Have as a Representative ID" by designer Lee Seok-woo, who designed the Pyeongchang Olympic medals, ▲"Research on Domestic and International ID Card Design and Security Technology" by Hong So-young, deputy head of the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation’s design office, and ▲"Typography in Identification Cards" by typeface designer Minbon, a professor at Hongik University. Based on these, a comprehensive discussion on the new design and functional development direction of the Resident Registration Card will be held.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to promote a design and public idea contest for the Resident Registration Card in October based on the discussions from this forum. The design and ideas collected through the contest, as well as public suggestions, will be reflected to derive the direction for improving the Resident Registration Card design. Shin Eun-hyang, Arts Policy Officer at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated, "Although the Resident Registration Card is small in size, it is close to citizens' daily lives and has a greater and more important impact than any other public design. We will ensure that the process of creating the design is done together with the public so that it can become a more valuable national representative ID card."
