Court Dismisses Lawsuit, Rules in Favor of Company
A story has emerged about a married couple in China who were caught kissing at work and engaging in an extramarital affair, and after being fired, they filed a lawsuit against their company. However, the local Chinese court dismissed the lawsuit and ruled in favor of the company.
On the 7th, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that a pharmaceutical company in Sichuan Province, China, fired two employees last month for committing an affair within the company.
The affair between Liu (male) and Chen (female), who worked in the same department, was exposed in March 2020 when Liu's wife revealed their chat message records to the company. They were reported to have exchanged affectionate messages such as "I love you" and "I always want to see you." After the affair was exposed, Liu requested leave citing the need to "resolve family issues," and Chen's husband confronted Liu in front of colleagues at the company.
Despite the situation, the two did not stop their affair, and they were even seen kissing in the office. A female colleague, unable to tolerate this, asked Chen to stop such behavior, but it only escalated into an argument. Eventually, the next day, colleagues submitted written complaints about the affair to company officials.
In response, the company notified the two employees that they were being fired for "violating company regulations" due to their continued affair. The two then filed a lawsuit against the company demanding compensation. Chen demanded 26,000 yuan (approximately 4.9 million KRW), and Liu, who held a higher position than Chen, demanded more than 230,000 yuan (approximately 43.43 million KRW) from the company.
The company argued, "It is morally wrong, damages the company's reputation, and negatively affects the company, and the company clearly has the right to dismiss employees under the internal regulations." The local Chinese court also dismissed the lawsuit and ruled in favor of the company.
Local netizens who heard the news reacted with comments such as "This is truly a crazy world," "Filing a lawsuit against the company itself is shameful," and "Having the energy to find a colleague attractive means you are not working hard."
